Small Business Information System - Jason Schow

Executive Summary

Most start-ups and small businesses aren't financially stable enough to have the most up-to-date and state-of-the-art technologies. The business are, therefore, trying to keep costs low, while running as efficiently as possible. As efficiency is highly dependent on information accessibility, accuracy, analysis, and application, small businesses and start-ups are placed in a tough position, as information accessibility and accuracy can be very expensive to obtain. Thus, I have built a system that captures information accurately and makes it accessible in a way that allows easy analysis and understanding.

This system is built on a Microsoft Access Database, with a Microsoft Excel interface. The system is capable of invoicing customers through print and email, and allows for expenditure recording. All sales and purchase information is stored in the database, which can be queried to produce sales reports and expense reports. The resulting information is presented in a manner that will facilitate analysis for future application in the business. Security is, of course, an important issue, so access to the system and the reports is limited to employees and owners, and their access privileges are varying based on position, as well. Overall, this is an inexpensive, highly-functional system that will facilitate efficiency in operations.
